New Traditions - February 3, 1998

Host: Richard H. Fox

In Studio Interview: Erin McKeown - Web Site

Today's guest was Erin McKeown, the original folk funk blues jazz fusion! Last Friday, I saw Erin open for Dar Williams at Alumni Hall, Brown University, where Erin is a second year student. She warmed the house with her energetic set in which challenging lyrics were punctuated by driven guitar; her stories and songs blended in a stream of consciousness. The crowd, a mix of students and Dar fans, responded with genuine enthusiasm. There's been a buzz on the folk listserves about Erin - listen to it, she's real! Currently, Erin has a cassette (available directly or though Waterbug) and a cut on the Waterbug III Sampler. Now to the interview... Last April, when Erin visited for the first time, I noticed the growth in her writing and guitar playing compared to the songs on her cassette. A year later, there is dramatic progression, no doubt helped in part by her first tour last summer. Erin is confident and at ease whether playing in front of 700 people or in the studio. Her songs mirror her experiences, words reflecting the tenor of her guitar work, a fusion of styles musically and lyrically working with her vocals to present a full sound, even without her band. My live birthday present was Erin's last two songs, "Hips" stream poetry over rhythmic guitar, and "Something Comes" a catchy, playful attitude which has been echoing in my mind since Friday. We also played a bunch of Erin's fav recordings. All in all, this was an upbeat start to our day in MetroWorcester.
