Sadly, Reta Madsen passed away suddenly on Saturday. I know that many people will remember her with great love and respect. A memorial is being planned for late March in St. Louis.
In sadness,

It will take me a very long while to adjust to what I just read , on this otherwise joyous site.
My dear dear galpal Ellen (Spier) has passed away.
Ellen and I had always stayed in touch, it seems "just" at the cosmic points in our life and now, we connect again with this most cosmic of messages I have viewed, her passing.
I am so proud that Bobbie (Powers) was with her dear sisrer Judy (also a friend of mine) at her memorial. Ellen and Bobby, Bobbie and Ellen...always in one breath as one word.
This hits me to the cosmic core yet knowing that Bobbie once again was her Herald.
If any wish to share thoughts about her loss please contact me at the e-mail address above or directly by phone 503-752-5609 or by mail 1312 SW 10th Ave. # 408 Portland, Or 97201

Hey Webster Clan!
Been a while since I've checked in here. Love the new additions etc.
I'm still in Hawaii pushing telescopes around. Bumped into another member of this clan last summer and we decided to get married! I'm sure many of you may remember her, Beth Giguere? Yup we did the deed in January in Boulder Colorado.
Ya never know what's behind door #2 unless you open it, or it may just swing open and hit ya in the face when you least expect it.
Would love to hear from y'all...

Yes, he's still alive!
Living in Las Vegas (for now) Since getting married 26 years ago, I've been a moving target, living in Decatur Il, Durham, NC, Atlanta, Chattanooga, Dayton OH, Brandon, SD. There may be a few more but I forget. Anyway, once you've tried all the fast food places in one town, it's time to move, right? Janet is a hospital pharmacist and Zack is in 8th grade. I've had as many careers as homes. 25 years in computer and software support, 1 year as a home inspector, a couple years as a land barron and property manager, househusband and now back in school going for a RN degree. Yes, it's been an interesting life. I just keep starting over so it will never end.
Just completed my first book called "Diver Zack and his First Underwater Adventure". All three of us are avid scuba divers and my son and I wrote about his experience at 12 learning to be a certified diver. (Anyone know any publishers?) Starting my second book called "My Life As Sam" which is really for my son to have and pass to his kids (if there are any) Don't worry ladies, it's not a kiss and tell. I don't know if its publication worthy but fun to write anyway. Just a collection of short stories about significant happenings in my life.
Living in Las Vegas now but planning another move this summer (yes, still have the boxes from the last move) to Asheville NC. Less raz-ma-taz and more mountains and 4 seasons.
Met with Marty and Andie Wolf 2 weeks ago when they were in town.
It's been a long time but the memories of those years remind me how blessed I am to have been part of "the revolution". If I had my life to live again I would start it right there at Webster.
I know I'm not a big fan of reunions and such but please give me a call if you find yourself in whatever town I happen to be living in at the time. Would love to meet up again.

I just looked through Eve's photos and saw Gael Infande in #5 and on page 2 in # 33 with Chris Dawson. And #30 on page 2 is Andy Porter - he looked like an angel with those curls. Bill Patterson had a group of similar pictures. It is great to go back and smile as I remember a quiet gentle time in my life filled with many wonderful people.
Webster was a great place to grow-up at - thanks for the memories.

I am very sorry to report to the Webster community that Theophanis "Ted" Polites, who was an acting major at Webster in the early 70s, died last Wednesday, October 5th at Calvary Hospice Center in the Bronx. His wife, Kathryn Chilson, who also studied at Webster, was with him until very late the evening before, and he told her several times how tired he was. He died in his sleep sometime between 7 and 7:30 in the morning. He was one of my very closest friends for over thirty years. I will miss him more than I can measure.

Long time listener, first time caller. I'm still in St. Louis working as an artist and teacher. Spoke with Ira Sotkin about the Poetry Reading at this year's reunion - said it went pretty well. I am curious to know if there are any others out there still making art who might be interested in an exhibit at Loretto Gallery at next years reunion, a visual compliment to the verbal performance. If so let me know

Those of you who were at Webster for the 70-71 school year may remember redheaded Ray Fulton, who played on the WC team for just that one season... Ray passed away this morning at St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka CA, surrounded by his family and friends. Ray was a high school classmate of mine from Summit NJ, as was another Webster alumnus, Bill Eldred.

Hello old Friends and Gentle Warriors. . . I'm finally crawling into the tech-age, and am learning a little about this internet. FUN to find y'all at Webster 70 and glad to know the Clan thrives (great job Foxy!!). . . but I'm curious as to why the entries here on the message board are mostly so dated ~ is everyone just doing individual e-mail? I'm a long-time transplant in Minnesota, and have been in touch here-and-there over the years with Zoe, Carole, Kyle, Ira, Bamel.... Found the Photo Gallery Page 6 quite by accident a couple weeks ago...what fun! Hope everyone is well, happy, and continuing to do what we always did best...bringing some sense of light, balance, and peace to this world.........

Hello Fellow Oldtimers,
I'm enjoying being a grandpa.Shiloe is 2 years old and a real firecracker.
My wife Cheri and I love babysitting him which we do 3 or 4 times a week.
Hoping to make the 2003 reunion a great gathering.
Anybody heard Tom Petty's new album "The Last DJ?" He's talking about the narrow playlists and stifling of creativity at most radio stations.
Good interview with him in the Rolling Stone with Christina Aguilera nude on the cover..
I just read it for the articles.
See you all next October.

Murray Changer sent the Webster link my way, and have enjoyed returning to the scene of the crime. Webster was a great place, a wild place, a place of joy and regret that still conditions what I think and feel about the world. Am glad the 70's period has been remembered - a few years back it seemed as if the University was trying to forget we ever happened. But I do wish there could be more about the theatre and theatre department here. I don't have any pictures, but perhaps some one out there does. It would be nice to share them. After all, what we did on stage in the 70's carried its own revolutionary weight. Some of us didn't actually need a stage to create theatre; drama could spill at a moments notice all over the entire campus. Remember Chuck M. and Bobby A. attending classes in full drag? (Where are those guys?)

Anyway, Marita Woodruff was one of the most important teachers I ever had. What she taught is still with me today. Same with Larry Blades, who was smart, kind, and a great man to pal around with. Peter Sargent allowed us to explore our craft even when what we did pushed past the stated rules of the department. He was a great man who did not allow mindless rules get in the way of education and art. I also remember Jan Landzettle, the woman who ran the dorms. She was a big, strong woman and I was a little afraid of her at first. But she was always good to me and fear turned to respect.

Since Webster, I have done all sorts of things. MFA at Tulane University, directed theatre, some video; have lived all over the United States, working, directing, keeping busy and out of trouble. I currently live in New Orleans, own a video store, Video Alternatives, direct and write. Am finishing up a DV feature I shot last year and am planning another to be shot in December. Have written a film treatment about a middle aged man who delivers pizzas, goes kinda crazy and causes all sorts of trouble. I have an agent in Hollywood and am doing my best to break into that whole arena. Am 48 years old, have lost all the weight I carried in the 70's and am doing pretty good. Alive and kicking. Would love to hear from other Webster friends and lovers - please email.

Tomorrow I'll be hosting a visit from John Van Kirk and Ted Polites at my home up here on the northern edge of Westchester County, NY. That got me to thinking of "Hocksercliffe", the big Victorian house just off Grand and I-44 we lived in during the 73-74 school year, and that in turn led me to think of all the other Webster folk I haven't seen for so many years, and so I just naturally ended up surfing on over here to the Webby Site. Have another reunion soon, please. I won't miss it.

Dear Broadside Haters

I was very interested to discover that the Broadside still lives in exile. For something that was such an easy target, it is surprising to see how many of us on the staff actually went on to make a living as writers and communicators. While you may not have appreciated what we were doing during the time, I believe we did a good job of trying to keep the College (excuse me, University honest). I still keep in touch with several former Broadsiders; Chris Campbell, Katy Quigley, Greg Gerber, Jon Dressel.

I have spent the past twenty years as a free lance writer and business communications consultant in Chicago. I just took a full time position as the Manager of Group Marketing Communications for British Petroleum in London. I know I became the sellout you may have all predicted, but I have been generally satisfied with the way my life turned out. The last time I visited Webster a couple of years ago I took my 10 year old daughter with me to look at some of the back issues of the Broadside. I was actually quite surprised how good some of the writing actually was. She was not as impressed, by my writing or my shoulder length hair.

Glad to see the Broadside still live on, even in exile. Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Michael Dennehy (Formally Michael Lee, Class of 72 and Former Editor of the much maligned BROADSIDE)

Here I am in my client/server class learning SQL, taking a little break for a moment to
say hi. Glad to see everyone in Westport. Has brought back many fond memories. Some of my memories:
walking the halls of 4th Loretto hearing
'Jesus Christ Superstar' mixing with 'TOMMY',
'Tapestry', Sweet Baby James, 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', 'Purple Haze', Laura Nero,
Joni Mitchell, CSNY etc...peasant blouses,
patching bellbottoms, Sam Conviser building a throne-like chair in the tv room on 4th Flr Admin, Ben Kloepper doing creative statuary with
Barbie Dolls and a glue gun--also on 4th floor Ad Bldg, Seena Kohl smoking cigars in Anthropology 101, Michael Salevouris performing as Napoleon in a Theatre Dept in-house performance of the musical 'Applause, Applause"--same music but rewritten lyrics---to portray the French Revolution and the beheading of King Louie and Queen Marie Antoinette--thus the name of the show, "Chop,Chop; Clump, Clump". IT WAS WONDERFUL. Watching 'Nosferatu' on the 3rd flor of the Ad building as part of a film appreciation class...it was the first silent film portrayal of the story of Dracula. Scared the shit out of me....Getting 3 credit hours for sitting thru all the episodes of "CIVILISATION". . .thanks to PBS. . . .Gloria Stein and Robin (???) from MS magazine speaking in the lounge in Loretto to a packed room...asking all the men to leave about 30 min. into the discussion..and the women making the men leave. (some hard feelings there!) Margaret Mead speaking at the Loretto Hall followed by a one on one with all of us Anthro/Sociology/Psych majors at one of the houses. Piercing blue eyes and a cane, limping.
I was in awe of her. Sitting in Loretto auditorium with maybe 15 other people listening on a Sunday afternoon to Albert King play unbelievable blues guitar. Couldn't believe I was there...couldn't believe no one else was!
Playing bumper pool in the basement & pinball, too. Got to be pretty good. Philosophy classes with Tom ????-he had us write an essay on how Plato would present the argument"Make Love Not War"...also Art Sandler for Philosophy of Language;
Nadia Ramzy for studies of American culture...
It was a wonderful experience; and, now that I've found all of you again, I know I am not the only one who felt that way about it.

Gotta get back to my school work,
Bye for now,
Mary

The reunion was a lot of fun. Thanks to Tim and Didi Noelker, Lew and Melanie Prince for their hospitality. This is getting to be a habit but I suppose it's better than smoking crack. Altho I've never tried crack. Even those who didn't know each other well or at all have become friends and that's real nice. Sat. night dancing in circles was especially enjoyable. I was reading through the archives and wanted to add a bit of history here for those who were speculating about when males moved into the dorms. I saw Jerry Bamel's note which is the closest to being right.

Webster switched over from all women's catholic to co-ed secular around '69. At that time they hired a new director of admissions and financial aid, named T. Michael Murphy (a red headed gentleman). Mike's job mandate from (Sister) Jacqueline Grennan (WC President) was to get the male population dramatically increased. So, he aggressively recruited male students for all grades, not just freshmen. It was hard to find any upperclassmen from other colleges weird enough to transfer to Webster in their junior or senior year. But there were a few of us.

I transferred in August '70 as a senior. Go figure, but I was caught up in what Webster College had to offer...and it seemed like a great adventure. Besides, Mike Murphy was one hell of a saleman. I pulled up in front of the Administration Building in August 1970 with a house full of furniture in a U-Haul Truck and tried to fit into a microcloset of a room on Fourth Floor Admin. So did a junior named Michael Paca Thomas (Paca). We were roommates. At that time, I was a full time male dorm student in the class of '71 and Mike was a fulltime male dorm student in the class of '72. Mike was a theater major and had many of the leads in 70-71. Good guy with a great GTO and a wonderful voice. I was a math/poli sci major. The faculty couldn't figure out what to do with a senior math major so I mostly had independent student with math professor Rich Singer and spent my time working on the Broadside (newspaper) and having a great year socially. It was also a non-presidential election year, so I got involved working some congressional races.

Jerry Bamel was with us on 4th Floor Ad in '70 as a freshman, and there had been one entering freshman class with male students before his (in '69) so he is correct that for male dorm students who spent all four years at Webster, '73 would have been the year they graduated.

All of which is a long winded way of saying that the graduating Webster Class of '71 had at least one full time male dorm student. And I am damned proud of that.

Hi everyone, Well, Jim Porter and I talked ourselves into coming to the reunion. The dance at the cafeteria sound like deja vu all over again. The party at Tim Noelker's sounds like fun. And any excuse to visit Vintage Vinyl works for me. For any Frank Lingo fans out there who want to read my op-ed articles in The Kansas City Star, go to kcstar.com then click on Opinion and search for Frank Lingo. See ya in October.

Hey Websterites!!!

It is with much regret that I will not be attending the reunion in October. I was counting on a closure of the telescope for the month but that has changed and I'm not gonna get the time away. I really wanted to make it and see you folks face-to-face, make whoppie and generally fill my nostrils with that fine St.Louis air. If anyone finds that they might be in Hawaii please look me up!

Aloha,
Rusty

Hello to all and sundry!
So glad that John Mcvickers wrote me and told me
about this site! What a blast from the past -
especially since I now live in Israel and I'm a
bit far away...I'd love to correspond with anyone from the class of '71 and up or down. Do
write if you remember me, it'll make my day! I live in a suburb of Tel Aviv and have 5 children
mine, his and ours (the usual boomer demographic), I still work in ceramics (30 years, is this possible??), I still sing (Israel
National Choir - Israel Opera - and Bluegrass
Music), I'm still way too chatty, so that's enough for now!

I'm thinking how pretty Ellen Epstein looked in her pic at the reunion and anyone in DC must come see me. I'm not a geek, I don't have a webpage. Is this allowed?
